Breastmilk is the best for babies. The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. Unnecessary introduction of bottle feeding or other food and drinks will have a negative impact on breastfeeding. After six months of age, infants should receive age-appropriate foods while breastfeeding continues for up to two years of age or beyond. Consult your doctor before deciding to use infant formula or if you have difficulty breastfeeding.

Dental Care During Pregnancy

Brushing your teeth immediately after vomiting could damage your enamel due the softening of the enamel from the stomach acid. If you vomit during your pregnancy, you might want to consider to wait for about half an hour before brushing your teeth and start off using only a mouthwash.

Tip: Do not brush your teeth immediately after vomiting!

During pregnancy, hormonal changes take place in your body. It produces placental hormones (HCG, HPL, estrogen, progesterone) and maternal hormones (prolactin, FSH, LH, oxytocin, vasopressin, thyroid hormones, cortisone and cortisol, aldosterone, parathyroid hormone). These hormonal changes are also noticeable in the mouth and on the teeth. The gum now has better circulation and is more prone to bleeding gums. The pH of the saliva is now more acidic than usual, especially due to frequent vomiting during early pregnancy. Bacteria can also be easily multiplied. Therefore, it is important to take note of your oral hygiene during pregnancy.

Clean your teeth thoroughly with a dental floss after each meal. It is also important to make regular visits to the dentist every three months. Remember to inform your dentist that you are pregnant to avoid certain treatments that could be harmful to your baby. Longer treatments should be postponed until after the birth of your baby.

Use a soft brush with light massage to counter bleeding gums. You may rinse your mouth or consume drinks with sage or chamomile to counteract inflammation and disinfect the oral cavity. Try to avoid consumption of sweet foods and ensure a healthy, balanced diet that is high in calcium.

Some changes may be uncomfortable: you can enjoy your old form after pregnancy. The hormonal balance is changed again and the pregnancy-related changes usually regress.
